The present invention relates to an automatic sampler for air adjacent to the sa mpler, or its inlet port, which will either analyze the sample, or protect the sample unti l it can be analyzed by forensic specialists, by use of an event detection module, a sample suction device, a filter and sample holding chamber, coordinating electrical devices, an alytical mechanisms, and one or more heat protection mechanisms. Only materials available after a fire are now sampled for forensic analysis; this severely limits the pos sible inferences. There can only be certainty in the determination of the source of an unwitnessed fire, if this device and process are used.
