PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical recording and reproducing method capable of maintaining a long life even if a short-wavelength semiconductor laser is used. SOLUTION: This optical recording and reproducing method consists in forming a laser beam as pulse beams of a duty ratio of <=10% at the time of reading out the information recorded on a recording medium by irradiating the recording medium with the laser beam emitted from the semiconductor laser. In addition, the semiconductor laser is driven by the currents of the prescribed quantity smaller than the threshold currents of the semiconductor laser when the pulse beams are in a non-light emission state.
