PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for speedily and accurately determining the direction of a fiber in an article containing a cloth or the fiber and a device with a simple configuration for executing the method. SOLUTION: The electric field vector of microwave is rotated at least±90 degrees for its polarization surface and is directed toward an article 100 to be inspected in a fixed position, the electric field vector of microwave that is reflected or passed by the article 100 is rotated in its original polarization surface and the microwaves are converted to a DC voltage signal, and the direction of a cloth in the inspection region of the article 100 is determined from the level of a microwave energy that is absorbed or reflected by the article 100.
