Device for destroying bodies (24) filled with explosive, such as surplus ammunition, by combustion, detonation or deflagration of the explosive contents, comprises an essentially gas tight destruction chamber (1) specially shaped to withstand the explosions generated inside it. A hot bed (10) inside the chamber is used to initiate combustion, detonation or deflagration of the explosive contents inside the bodies supplied to the bed by a suitable device (16), eg. an inlet (17) that can be opened and closed. Combustion gases and scrap metal are removed from the chamber through outlets (25). The chamber has a detonation and shrapnel resistant inner shell (2) predominantly comprising a large number of horizontal metal plates (5, 6, 11) positioned on top of each other. All of the plates, except those forming the inner shell ceiling (11), have a central hole that determines the shape and cross-sectional area for that particular section of the chamber inner shell. A gastight outer shell (3) surrounds the inner shell and is preferably covered with thermal insulation material. |
