A water cooled, compression ignition engine (1) running on a low cetane fuel comprising a turbocharger (7), an air to air aftercooler (15) and an intake air manifold (3) for supplying compressed combustion air to the engine (1), a heated bypass heat exchanger (19) using heated water from the engine (1) and disposed to bypass the aftercooler (15), and a modulating bypass valve (21) adapted to respond to intake manifold pressure to control the amount of combustin air bypassing the aftercooler (15) and being heated in the bypass heat exchanger (19) to eliminate misfiring and poor combustion during startup and when operating at low loads and promoting better fuel economy, performance and emissions as the load on the engine increases. |
