The device for vertical stretching of fabric in an automatic knitting machine, includes a series of members (22) for clamping the fabric (3) being formed, which are situated below longitudinal needle beds (1, 2). The clamping members (22) include oscillating claws (23) articulated to a supporting element (11) and aimed at cooperating with a stationary abutment plate (9), and presser plates (25) articulated to the claws (23) and designed to press elastically a longitudinal roller (10), arranged below the abutment plate (9) and rotated with a continuous motion. Slide elements (28), fixed to the supporting element (11), are reciprocated between a raised position, in which the fabric (3) is clamped, and a lowered position, in which the same fabric (3) is released. Cams (17) drive the claws (23) to close the clamping means (22), in a suitable phase relation with formation of the fabric (3) in the raised position of the slide element (28).
