摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording medium which can deal with a high recording speed and enables high precision and high density recording by incorporating an org. compd. recording material consisting of such a compd. that has at least two reactive positions in the molecule which absorb light in a specified wavelength region and can produce a dimer with another molecule, and that the molecules in the crystal structure are arranged to have an optically active part when the dimer is produced. SOLUTION: A compd. expressed by the formula is used as a recording material. In the formula, X1 is a disubstituted aromatic ring or heteroring, Y1 is a monosubstituted aromatic ring or heteroring, and R is a monosubstituted alkyl group. The optical recording medium containing this material is irradiated with patterned light in a specified wavelength range to produce dimers. The recording and reproducing method includes a writing process of information to cause rotary polarization in the irradiated part, and a reading process to read out the written information by mapping the rotatory degree of the medium to detect a part having optical rotatory and a part not having optical rotatory.
