PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a screen from being made darker than needed when a driver wearing polarizing sunglasses views a GH-STN type LCD (formed by adding dichromatic dyes as a guest to STN type liquid crystals, which are a host) used for the instrument panel, etc., of an automobile. SOLUTION: The direction 13 of the absorption axis (deviating 90 deg. from a polarization axis direction) of a front polarizing plate is set smaller than 74 deg. respectively in a positive or negative direction on the bases of the absorption axis direction [having right and left directions (both eye directions)] of the polarizing sunglasses that the driver viewing the display screen wears when viewed from the front side. More preferably this direction is set in a range of 0 deg.±50 deg.. The direction is set at about 44 deg. in the example of Fig. If the twist angle of liquid crystals is 240 deg., the rubbing direction of the back electrode substrate is set nearly equal to the direction 11 of the polarizing sunglasses and the rubbing direction of the front electrode substrate is set at about -60 deg.. |
