PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cable type steering system from which the steering torque of a steering wheel can be detected with a simple structure and the steering rigidity of which is not deteriorated. SOLUTION: In a cable type steering system in which the steering torque of a steering wheel is transmitted to wheels through a driving pulley 11dr, cables 5 and 6, and a driven pulley 11dn and assisted by a motor 25 for power steering, the angles of rotationθdr andθdn of the pulleys 11dr and 11dn when the steering wheel is operated are respectively detected by means of potentiometers 12dr and 12dn. Since the deviationΔθ=θdr-θdn between the anglesθdr andθdn is proportional to the elongations of the cables 5 and 6, namely, to the steering torque, an electronic control unit U controls the drive of the motor 25 based on the deviationΔθ.
