PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape which obviates the occurrence of clogging in a head in spite of repetitive traveling, substantially prevents the flawing of a magnetic layer, is imparted with high traveling durability and is suitable for high-density recording. SOLUTION: This tape has a nonmagnetic layer which contains nonmagnetic power and binder and is substantially nonmagnetic and the magnetic layer which includes ferromagnetic powder, lubricant, resin and polyisocyanate in this order on the one surface of a nonmagnetic base. The tape has a back coating layer on the other surface of the base. The crystallite size of the ferromagnetic powder is in a range of 50 to 200Å. The ratio of the peak intensity of the C atom spectra and Fe atom spectra measured with the surface of the magnetic layer by an Auger electronic spectroscopy is in a range of 9/1 to 20/1. The ratio of the peak intensity of the N atom spectra and Fe atom spectra measured by an X-ray electronic spectroscopy is in a range of 0.09/1 to 0.20/1.
