An apparatus consists of mechanisms (2, 2'; 4, 4') for constricting the container's neck (12), and another mechanism (3, 3') for sealing it. The constricting mechanism comprises at least two pairs of forks (21, 21'; 41, 41') which move towards one another to constrict the container neck between them, with the sealing mechanism in the form of a third pair of forks (31, 31') between the other two. All the forks are operated by power cylinders (23, 23', 33, 33', 43, 43') which are preferably pneumatic, and the welding forks operate e.g. by ultra-sound.
