Apparatus comprises a set of refractory assemblies for transferring molten metal between an upstream and a downstream container vessel, and includes: (a) a tapping spout from the upstream container formed of a number of refractory components, each component having /-1 surface contacting and forming a mating surface with corresponding surface of an adjacent component; (b) a liquid metal flow regulator for controlling the flow of molten metal between the containers; and (c) a shroud channel formed between two of the components, and positioned around the tapping spout adjacent to one of the mating surfaces. The shroud channel includes an inlet for the introduction of a gas or fluid, and an outlet to allow the gas or fluid to escape from the plant. Also claimed is plant for transferring molten metal between two containers, using a set of refractory transfer assemblies, similar to that claimed above. A method of regulating the supply of an inert gas shroud to the above transfer assembly plant during the transfer of the metal is also claimed, the flow being injected into a shroud channel at a sufficiently high rate to allow excess gas to escape from the outlet irrespective of the flow rate of the gas drawn into the tapping spout.
