The pick-up has a movable transmitter (11) and a fixed sensor (12), past which the transmitter can be moved in steps, and at each step an electric counting pulse results. The sensor part has an electric switch (18,19) with a fixed and a movable switch element (181,191 or 182,192) for opening and closing a switch circuit for producing counting pulses. The transmitter has multi-switch elements (21), which are arranged one behind the other in steps and with each step of the transmitted part operates the moving switch element transiently, opening or closing the switch. The transmitter is movable in two directions (16,17) opposed to each other. The sensor has two electric switches assigned respectively to a movement direction. The moving switch elements (182 or 192) of it are so arranged in the movement path (16,17) of the transmitter part, that the switch elements (21) at the transmitter, in which a movement direction (16) of the transmitter only operates the end in the inverse movement direction (17) only operates the other switch (18,19).
