Communication network with automatic nodal configuration

The network contains a master node (10), to which several identical slave nodes (12-18) are coupled via a common (bus) (20) and a daisy chain communication path (28,34,38,44,48). Each slave is allocated an individual identifier sequentially in a clockwise direction, by transmitting configuration messages over the common bus, and configuration release signals calls over the daisy chain path. At the start the master sets its configuration release signal to 1, and transmits a configuration message over the bus for configuring the first slave node (12). Then the configured slave node sets its U-calls output (30) for the release of the next node (14) in the chain, which is released for configuration until all slave nodes have been configured.
