PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the reproducibility or a thin line with desired image density, to prevent color mixture and to improve stability at the time of forming an image by specifying relation among the existence area of the edge of carrier earing, the revolving speed of a stirring screw and the outside diameter of the screw. SOLUTION: Developer is held on a cylindrical sleeve surface whose diameter is 5-25mm so as to form the carrier napping, and development is performed in the area where a distance between a sleeve and an image carrier is 200-500μm. At such a time, the edge of the carrier napping does not exist in an area B shown by an expression, but exists in an area A shown by an expression in a developing state. In the expression, R is the radius(mm) of the image carrier, (r) is the radius(mm) of the sleeve, d0 is the closest distance (μm) between the image carrier and the sleeve, Vp-p is the difference (V) of the positive and the negative peak values of impressed AC component on the sleeve, VH and VL are the surface potential (V) of a non-exposure part and an exposure part, and (x) is a distance(μm) on an electrostatic latent image surface from the center of development. The revolving speed N(rpm) of the stirring screw and the outside diameter(mm) of the screw are set to 5<ND<1/2> <90.
