A measuring device (10) is disclosed which includes a proximal end portion(20) having an actuation member (24) thereon and a distal end portion (22) having an expandable member (28) thereon wherein the actuation member (24) and the expandable member (28) are in mechanical or fluid communication via a lumen (40) which extends therebetween such that actuation of the actuation member (24) causes the radial expansion of the expansion member (28) so that when the measuring device (10) is placed in a puncture with the distal end portion (22) in a blood vessel, the measuring device (10) may be withdrawn until the expandable member (28) contacts the wall of the blood vessel adjacent to the puncture to provide the user with an indication of the distance between and/or depth of the blood vessel beneath the skin of the patient.
