The method has a number of paper strips each fed from respective supply reels and wound on to a multi-cornered, rotating winding mandrel, so that their edges overlap, with the wound sleeve displaced relative to the winding mandrel towards the subsequent work station. The rotation rate of the winding mandrel is controlled to ensure that the paper strips are fed from the supply reels at a constant rate, with centralised control of the operating drives for the winding mandrel and the band drives via a virtual master axis (57).
