Monitoring functioning capability of timer connected to IC engine control unit

The monitoring method is carried out so that during the operation of the control unit, at a selectable time point, the relative time is read from the timer under test, and simultaneously a further timer, esp. a software timer of the control unit with a specified selected time interval is started. Following the expiry of this time interval, the relative time of the timer under test is read again. The difference between the two relative times and the selected time interval selected by the second timer, is determined and a faulty functioning is identified, if the deviation from a specified amount is exceeded.
