Hydrophobic, hydrothermally stable zeolite, used to adsorb harmful organic substances

Modified hydrothermally stable zeolite is first treated with an acidic hydroxy aluminosilicate solution that contains species with Si-O-Al linkages in the pH range 3-6.5. It is then treated with a base until the aluminosilicate precipitates. After separation of the base and washing of the zeolite, it is heated to 380-420 deg C until the appearance of an ordered surface structure. Preferably the starting zeolite is a de-aluminised Si rich Y-zeolite. The hydroxy aluminosilicate solution used in the treatment is 0.01-1 M with respect to Al. The pH range is 3-3.5.
