An active code carrier is located inside a spare paper roll (1) provided with a cover (3). Said code carrier (12) interacts with a reading head or a writing/reading head (27-29). This enables roll-specific data to be read or updated at any given time irrespective of the presence of packaging or any outer paper windings. This is particularly useful for driverless transport systems and semiautomatic or fully automatic roll handling.
