A catalyst system (I) consists of (A) a metal complex of formula (1) and (B) a Lewis and/or a protonic acid. Also claimed are: (i) a method for the preparation of copolymers (II) of carbon monoxide and olefin(s) in the presence of (1); and (ii) fibre, film, moulded articles and coatings containing (II). In (1), R<5> = H, 1-20C hydrocarbon, 3-30C organosilicon, NR<6>R<7> or formula (1a); q = 0-20; R', R", R<6>-R<8> = H, 1-20C hydrocarbon or 3-30C organosilicon; M = Group VIIIB metal; E<1>, E<2>, Z = Group VA element; R<1>-R<4> = 1-20C hydrocarbon or 3-30C organosilicon; A<1>, B<1> = 1-4C alkylene, silylene bridged organic group or NR<8>; L<1>, L<2> = ligand; p, m, n = 0-4; and p = m/*n.
