Circuit for use with e.g. motor vehicle IC engine ignition coil

The ignition coil 1 has a primary 11 and a secondary 12 coil that are coupled by a zener diode 13 to the voltage terminal Va. The primary current is controlled by a switch 20. The zener diode provides zero voltage drop in one direction and a constant drop in the other. This ensures a switching voltage of less than 1.18kV results during ignition and that the induced voltage in the secondary is reduced.
