A process for increasing the amount of isolatable products in a by-product stream from the production of 1,6-hexane-diol (HDO), comprises: (a) combining the by-product stream with water, and (b) reacting the combination at 250-400 deg C and 1000-3000 psi overpressure to give /- reaction product.
