PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to covert formed codes to exact codes and to assure the exact sorting of postal items and the like by comparing the codes formed by a code forming means with the exact codes or the similar codes formed therefrom or already stored information. SOLUTION: When the start of transportation is indicated by an input device 12, a controller 8 forms the similar codes corresponding to the exact codes stored in a corresponding to code memory section 11 in a similar code forming section 9. These codes are stored as the exact codes and the similar codes into the respective recording areas in a code storage table. When the postal items to be subjected to sorting processing are charged into the charging port 2 of the code imparting device 1, the respective postal items are transported by a transporting path 5. At the time of the postal items pass an address recognition section 3, the addressees of the postal items are recognized and coded.
