PRODUCTION OF ALKYL 5-HYDROXYALKANOATE AND PERFUME COMPOSITION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as a compounding material for a perfume composition by transesterifying aδ-lactone in an alcohol. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I (R1 is a 1-11C alkyl) is transesterified in an alcohol of the formula R2 OH (R2 is a 2-4C alkyl) in the presence of an acid such as p-toluenesulfonic acid or a boron trifluoride etherate as a catalyst to give a compound of formula II such as ethyl 5-hydroxydecanoate. By this method, the compound of formula II can be efficiently and readily produced. The compound has a tuberose-like jasmine-like, milk-like perfume and flavor and is usable as compounding material for a compounding perfume composition for cosmetic and food.
