An unsaturated ester such as vinyl acetate is prepared by reacting an alkene such as ethylene with an anhydride of a carboxylic acid such as acetic anhydride in the presence of a Group VIII noble metal or compound as catalyst and a copper salt such as cupric chloride and/or cupric acetate as promoter. The reaction may be carried out at a temperature of 20-80‹ C. and a pressure of 60-750 p.s.i.g. The unsaturated ester is recovered from the reaction mixture. |
