The suspension is provided with level-regulating means and a control device dependent on curves for adjusting the height of pneumatic bellows 13, 14, the device being controllable by a constrained gyro 45, and comprising a compressor 27 which, in dependence on travel through a curve conveys air from bellows on the inside of the curve to bellows on the outside, switching valves being arranged in the suction and delivery pipes of the compressor for respectively shutting off and connecting these pipes to the bellows, and switching valves being provided for shutting off the level regulating means. The method operates as follows:- a step-by-step switch 43 starts at step 1 in plane I and an axle generator 41 is connected to relay 42. When the vehicle travels in a straight path, if the compressor 27 is operating correctly as supervised by a vacuum controller 36, the controller will operate a contact 69 and signal lamp 70 will be illuminated. When a minimum speed of travel is exceeded the gyro 45 starting up causes lamp 47 to light, thus indicating operation of the gyro. The remainder of the check can be carried out whilst the vehicle is stationary. The switch 43 is then moved to step 2 and a source of current 49 switches on relay 42 thus starting the gyro. Movement of the switch to step 3 energizes magnet 52 attracting armature 54 from its neutral position thus simulating a left-hand curve and the control arrangement of the suspension system operates magnetic valves thereof causing compressed air to be conveyed from the left to the right bellows. Correct operation thereof is indicated when the bellows close associated contacts 61, 62 allowing current from source 65 through contact 61, diode 67 and contact 62 to signal lamp 66. When the gyro reaches full deflection valves 21-24 and 30, 31 are de-energized so that controllers 34, 35 are de-pressurized causing contacts 61, 62 to open and lamp 66 to be extinguished. Switch 43 is then moved to step 4 causing electromagnet 52 to be de-energized. Resistance R 1 diverts voltage at tapping 57 of potentiometer 58 thus simulating tilting of the vehicle body. By means of springs 51 gyro 45 is re-centered and the control arrangement, by simulation of an exit from the curve, causes re-erection of the vehicle body and lamp 66 lights. As soon as the gyro reaches its central position the control interrupts the re-erection and lamps 66 and 68 are extinguished. Movement of the switch 43 to steps 5 and 6 simulate a right-hand curve and a similar procedure takes place. Hence the correct illumination of lamps 47, 66 and 68 indicates correct operation of the suspension. The checking may be carried out automatically.</p>
