The invention relates to a process, which can be carried out continuously, for disintegrating cell material in the form of dispersions or suspensions in water for the purpose of obtaining cell constituents. The invention avoids the use of solid ultrasonication activators and the establishment of a particular geometric form for the acoustic irradiation container by particular parameters with regard to the sonot rode angle, the depth of immersion of the sonotrode, the ratio of extent of immersion of the sonotrode to the acoustic irradiation volume and the ratio of extent of immersio n of the sonotrode to the solid matter content of the medium to be sonicated. In this pro cess, the solid matter in the cell dispersion or suspension can be in the range from about 0.5 to 65% by weight.
