PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a molybdenum oxide containing an alkali metal and having minute plate form, i.e., flaky form, by electrolyzing an aqueous solution of an alkali metal molybdenate and heating the product deposited on the electrode. SOLUTION: This molybdenum oxide containing an alkali metal has a plate form having a thickness of 1-30μm and a maximum width of 50-500μm. The apparent bulk density is decreased compared with conventional material to increase the practical surface area by the plate form of the oxide. The alkali metal is e.g. Li, Na, K or Rb. The amount of the alkali metal is generally about several wt.% to 20wt.%. A molybdenum oxide containing several alkali metals can be produced by using several kinds of alkali metals. The oxide can be used as an effective reaction reagent or catalyst owing to its large surface area. It is also usable as various fillers or various devices such as battery taking advantage of the reception and release of the contained alkali metal.
