PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal material which is suitable for realizing a relatively low threshold voltage and a short response time when used in an IPS display. SOLUTION: This display is provided with a re-alignment layer used for re-aligning a liquid crystal containing a liquid crystal medium having positive dielectric anisotropy and has a structural element the electric field of which is parallel to the liquid crystal layer and is significant. The medium should contain at least one mesogenic compound represented by the formula (R<1> is H, a 1-15C alkyl or an alkyl and is unsubstituted or substituted with at least one halogen atom, provided that one or more CH2 groups in this group may be independently replaced by -O-, -S-, CO-, -COO-, -OCO- or -OCO-O in a manner that any oxygen atoms are not directly bonded to each other. |
