PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as a plasticizer for a vinyl chloride-based resin, etc., by using a specific silica titania catalyst. SOLUTION: A carboxylic acid such as benzoic acid, adipic acid, phthalic acid, trimellitic acid or their anhydride is mixed with an alcohol such as a 4-10C aliphatic saturated monohydric alcohol in an inert gas atmosphere and a silica titania catalyst containing titanium of tetrahedron coordinate structure and having >=0.6 hydrophilic functional groups/mm<2> surface density is used to give the objective compound. The catalyst is obtained by partially hydrolyzing an alkoxysilane or a silicon halide, then adding a hydrolyzable titanium compound and hydrolyzing the compound in the presence of a basic catalyst at two stages. This method is excellent in ester yield, slightly elutes titanium from the catalyst and is capable of recovering and reusing the catalyst. |
