PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To incorporate Ni rich layers into a battery in the state of exposing its surface by forming the Ni rich layers on the surface layer parts of hydrogen occlusion alloy particles and further forming protective layers adhered with ammonia thereon. SOLUTION: The surfaces of the alloy particles come into contact with air and moisture and the surface layers 3 of nickel oxide, etc., are formed in the stage when the hydrogen occlusion alloy powder is prepd. (a). These layers are changed to the Ni rich layers 4 by receiving the subsequent heating and reduction effect by the high-temp. ammonia, and the protective layers 5 adhered with the ammonia are formed to cover the surfaces of the Ni rich layers 4 (b). Then, there is no possibility that the surfaces of the Ni rich layers 4 are oxidized. The electrode formed by using the alloy treated in such a manner is built as a negative electrode into the alkaline storage battery, by which the electrode surface is brought into contact with an electrolyte and the protective layers 5 formed on the surfaces of the alloy particles 1 are melted into the electrolyte. The Ni rich layers 4 are thus exposed on the electrode surface. The electrochemical catalyst activity of the electrode is thus improved. |
