Non-magnetic substrates with electrically conductive surface and average surface peak-to-valley height 200 angstroms, for planar magnetic storage layers, are made by smoothing at least one surface of a mechanically stable core material, pref. plate- or borosilicate glass or pref. Cu-Be; applying at least one thin electrically conductive intermediate layer when using an electrically non-conductive core, esp. by electroless metal deposition; and electroplating the electrically conductive surface or intermediate layer while using a bath contg. additives which suppress coarse crystallite formation in favour of a fine-grained, polycrystalline, isotropic layer. Pref. intermediate layers are of Ag, Cr, and Cu, Cr and/or Au, and/or their alloys, and pref. electrodeposited metal layer is bright Cu, bright Ag or bright Au, pref. 2-20 mu m thick.
|
