Reticulo-endothelial stimulant (I) prepared as follows:- Unicellular green algae (dried or fresh), e.g. "Chlorella", is extracted (opt. with heating) with a hydrophilic organic solvent, H2O, an alkaline soln., and an acid soln. The organic solvent, alkali, and acid are removed from their respective extracts, the resultant soln. dild. with (pref. 4 vols. of) a hydrophilic solvent, filtered to remove impurities, dild. with EtOH, and filtered, giving I as a white ppt. Purification of this gives a water-soluble, nitrogenous, polysaccharide.
