Theatre stages, TV studios etc. are illuminated by lighting having a plane member emitting light from an organic light - emitting diode. Pref. the LED has a layer of a conjugated polymer, partic. polyphenylenevinylene, which is applied between at least one transparent and one metallic electrode on a glass substrate. Different colours can be produced by variation of voltage and a matrix can be formed to produce a range of colours. Reduces problem of heat emission while allowing range of colours to be produced.
