Apparatus for obtaining power from the tide includes a hollow float 1 guided to move up and down on the tide, means (not shown) for filling the float with water when the float is in an upper position, means (not shown) for emptying the float when the float is in a lower position, transmission means 4, 6, 7 affording a power output for connecting the float to a load, at least on the downward movement of the float, and an energy storage device comprising a weight 11 arranged to be raised by the downward movement of the float. There may be several vertical members 4 spaced along the length of the float 1. Each vertical member 4 is formed as a rack and engages a pinion of which only one is shown. All the pinions incorporate free wheels and are carried by the same shaft 6. In a modification chains are used in place of the vertical members 4.</p> |
