A dye composition (I) for keratinous fibres comprises at least one oxidant free dye precursor of formula (II), where R1 = H or 1-4C alkyl, (poly)hydroxyalkyl, alkylhydroxyalkyl, (alkyl)aminoalkyl, (dihydroxy)alkylaminoalkyl, or R"R'N-alkyl group; R2 = as R1 or not present; R', R" = alkyl groups, which can form 5 or 6 chain aliphatic or heterocyclic cycles with the N; A = O or NH; X and Y = 5 or 6 chain hydrocarbon cycle which may contain one or more N or S atoms in the chain and be substituted by one or more groups or atoms (e.g. NO2, NH2, acetylamino, OH, SP3H, Br, Cl, F, CH3SO2, CF3, OCF3, 1-4C alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio or alkoxycarbonyl). Also claimed are (i) a method of dyeing keratinous fibres comprising the application of (I) followed by rinsing 3-60 minutes later; and (ii) a dye kit comprising 2 compartments, one containing (II), the other a compound (III) which reacts with (II) to produce a dye.
