In the production of an aluminium alloy bearing, an aqueous de-smutting solution comprising 20 to 60% by weight of sulphuric acid and 2 to 10% by weight of a peroxoborate, eg sodium perborate, is used after etching. An aluminium alloy layer 12 is bonded to a backing layer of steel 11, the aluminium is etched, cleaned with the de-smutting solution, and then an intermediate layer and an overlay are added to the aluminium layer (fig 1). Peroxocarbonates or peroxosulphates may also be used in the de-smutting solution. |
