A hand-held unit for measuring the temperature of a zone of a surface 1407 comprises an infrared sensor 1400 and a diffraction beam splitter 1405 mounted on a common structure, the beam splitter splitting an incident light beam 1403, eg from a laser source 1402, into three or more beams 1403a,b which are directed to points at the periphery of the measurement zone. The splitter may produce an annular array of spots on the surface round the zone and an additional spot in the centre of the zone. Tile axes of the sensor and the illuminating light 1406 may be coincident or offset. Also disclosed are units in which a laser beam is rotated by a moving mirror or by moving the laser itself to form an annular area of illumination about the zone. The laser beam may be swithced on and off to produce an array of light spots.
