PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a perfume comprising position isomers having a peculiar aroma and can impart aroma even when used in a small amount by subjecting 2-methylpenta-1,3-diene and acrolein to the Diels-Alder reaction. SOLUTION: 2-Methylpenta-1-3-diene and acrolein as starting materials are subjected to the Diels-Alder reaction to obtain position isomers beung 3,3- dumethyl-Δ<3> -tetrahydrobenzaldehyde (DTB isomer A) and 2,4-dimethyl-Δ<3> - tetrahydrobenzaldehyde (DTA isomer B) represented by the formulas. The rate of formation of isomers A and B can be varied by selecting the reaction temperature. A perfume comprising DTB isomer A or DTB isomer B alone can be used to impart aroma. When the isomers are used in the form of a mixture, it is desirable that the mixture contains 2.0-5.5mol of isomer A per mol of isomer B. When other aromatic substances are used in combination, it is desirable that they are contained in an amount of at least 0.01wt.% based on the mixture.
