<p>Unsatd. bicyclic hydrocarbons useful as starting materials for prepn. of macrocyclic cpds., esp. perfumes cyclopentadecanone ("EXALTON" (RTM)) and 3-methylcyclopentadecanone-1, known as muskone, are prepd. by hydrogenation of a ketone (II). (where one X is -O- and the other is 2 H and R is H or Me with Raney Ni as catalyst at room temp. and opt. raised press., esp. in an alkaline medium, using 2 moles H2/mole (II) and treating satd. bicyclic alcohol obtd. with an acid reagent effecting dehydration and isomerisation of double bond formed; esp. and inorganic acid, e.g. H2SO4 or H3PO4, or an acid salt, e.g. KHSO4 or an atomatic sulphonic acid, e.g. p-toluenesulphonic acid, or a mixt. of an inorganic acid with an organic acid, e.g. a mixt. of AcOH and H2SO4. The prodt. is of formula: II: C=X is H.</p> |
