PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly produce the subject optically active or racemic compound useful as a medical raw material by adding a base catalyst to a reaction system in high yield and high selectivity without requiring any heating. SOLUTION: The objective compound is produced by subjecting an ester of 4-amino-3-hydroxybutyric acid expressed by formula I (R is a 1-6C alkyl or benzyl) to a ring-closing reaction preferably in a solvent such as methanol in the presence of a base catalyst (preferably metal alkoxides such as sodium methoxide and sodium ethoxide), or adding a base catalyst (same as the above basic catalyst) to an ester of 4-azido-3-hydroxybutyric acid expressed by formula II and subjecting to a catalytic hydrogenating reaction while stirring under a hydrogen gas atmosphere in the presence of a metal catalyst such as palladium-carbon catalyst, preferably in a solvent such as methanol. |
