PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent adhesion of dross-containing molten metal to a sliding surface and to improve the wear resistance of a roll shaft and a bearing by providing a hardness difference between the shaft and bearing of a roll for plating, to be used in a state of immersion in a hot-dip metal coating bath, and also regulating the roughness of a sliding surface on the higher-hardness side to a specific value. SOLUTION: A hardness difference is provided between a roll shaft and a bearing, and the roughness of the surface on the higher-hardness side is regulated to 10-2.5μm Rmax. It is preferable that at least a part of the sliding surface on the higher-hardness side is composed of silicon nitride, sialon, or silicon carbide ceramics having hardness higher than that of dross existing in the molten metal, and chemical treatment is applied to this sliding surface to remove glass phases, foreign matter phases, precipitates, etc., contained in the grain boundaries 3 of ceramic grains 2, from the sliding surface to a depth of 1.0-2.5μm to form fine recesses 4. On the other hand, a sliding member, to be combined with the above, is constituted of a solid lubricating material, such as carbon/carbon fiber composite, having hardness lower than the hardness of the dross.
