PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a compd. which, when used for a luminescent layer of an electroluminescent element, emits light uniformly in red and is excellent in luminescent efficiency by using a europium complex. SOLUTION: This electroluminescent element has a structure wherein an anode, a hole trnasport layer formed from an org. compd., a luminescent layer, and a metal cathode are laminated successively on a glass substrate (an ITO glass substrate). An electron transport layer may be added further. At least one europium complex represented by formula I (R<1> and R<2> are each independently an optionally substd. alkyl, aryl, or heteroaryl group; and A<+> is a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium group) is used as a compd. for the luminescent layer. The org. compd. for the hole transport layer is a tert. amine compd. such as a triphenylamine deriv. represented by formula II (a to k are each independently 0-3 provided a is not 0) or formula III [l to z,α, andβare each independently 0 or 1; and A is two hydrogen atoms, -CH2 -, or -C(CH3 )2 -].
