PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a yield by preventing the trouble of cutting of a lug line and breakage of a steel band end without non-uniformizing the width of the steel band. SOLUTION: When the side of a steel band M is trimmed by a side trimmer 5 installed on the output side of a refining rolling facility 4, a plate width gauge 2 is installed upstream from the installation position of the side trimmer 5 side at a distance corresponding to the total length of the steel band, the plate width Wp1 to be measured by the continuous plate width gauge 2 is corrected by the plate width change amounts dW1 , dW2 to be estimated between the continuous plate width gauge 2 and the side trimmer 5, the corrected plate width value Wp2 of the steel band M in the position of the side trimmer 5, the corrected plate width value Wp2 and the plate width Ws+αin which trimming can be stably performed are compared with each other, and the right or wrong of side trimming of the steel band M is judged.
