The position of a valve stem 12 is controlled by means of a stepping motor 19 and a variably coupled transformer. Control pulses from a computer causes the stepping motor 19 to move coils 17 of the variably coupled transformer relative to its core 16. This causes an error signal to be transmitted along line 21 to amplifier 14. The count from amplifier 14 feeds motor 13 and drives it so that the valve stem 12 and core 16 are displaced in a manner to reduce the error signal.
