An electrostatic recording head unit and a method for detecting a fault caused in the electrostatic recording head provided with a device for detecting a head fault of the unit due to a short circuit between main electrodes, which is so structured that a main electrode current to be supplied to at least one group of main electrodes out of a plurality of the electrodes may be detected by a current detector, a value corresponding to a peak value of the main electrode current may be held, and the held value and the value corresponding to the main electrode current detected by the current detector may be compared to determine if the main electrode current is a short-circuit one or not. The electrostatic recording head is constituted with a plurality of main electrodes for discharging, a head assembly including a plurality of auxiliary electrodes located face to face with the main electrodes, connecting sections to be connected to the main electrodes respectively, connection boards connected via signal lines which are connected to the connecting sections, a main electrode driving board provided with a main electrode driving circuit for driving the main electrodes, an auxiliary electrode driving board provided with an auxiliary electrode driving circuit for driving the auxiliary electrodes, and a means for connecting the main electrode driving board and the auxiliary electrode driving board to the connection boards.
