<p>A two-step process for preparing 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol isobutyrate. The process comprises subjecting isobutyraldehyde to a first reaction in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide to produce a first reaction mixture containing 2,6-diisopropyl-5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxan-4-ol, and then subjecting the reaction mixture to a second reaction in the presence of an alkaline earth metal hydroxide to produce a second reaction mixture containing 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol isobutyrate. The 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol isobutyrate is recovered from the second reaction mixture and purified. By means of the invention, the desired product can be obtained at high yields and with a minimum of side products.</p> |
