A packet switching protocol uses both soft state and hard state for a connection in order to provide minimal initial connection setup time and efficient use of computing resources of packet switch and link bandwidth. A soft state packet swtiching protocol specifies the addresses of sender and destination on each packet. A hard state packet swtiching protocol specifies the connection identifier for a connection on each packet. Because the connection identifier of hard state is shorter than the address fields of soft state, the hard state packet switching protocol can get higher link utilization. However, the hard state packet switching protocol requires connection setup time and is less flexible. The hybrid packet switching protocol utilizes the benefits of both soft and hard state packet switching protocols. |
