In a method for controlling the speed of a vehicle engine (2) with an automatic transmission system (T/M) including a gear transmission (5) and a clutch (4), the fuel quantity supplied to the engine (2) is controlled so as to maintain the speed at a predetermined level in response to the operation for disengaging the clutch (4), and the fuel quantity is controlled from a predetermined time before the clutch (4) becomes completely engaged after the gear transmission (5) was shifted into a target gear position so as to gradually change the supplied fuel quantity to an amount corresponding to the amount of operation of the accelerating member (15) of the vehicle at that time, whereby the speed of engine (2) can be made a speed corresponding to the amount of operation of the accelerating member (15) when the clutch (4) has just been completely engaged. In the case where a braking device is operated, a target fuel quantity determined during the automatic gear-shifting operating is corrected, so that the driver experiences a sufficient feeling of deceleration corresponding to his operation of the braking device. |
